MRI privately in MEDflow

MEDflow is a private Diagnostic Imaging Center in Poznan. We perform all MRI examinations for a fee; we do not perform MRI examinations under the National Health Fund. We are distinguished by the waiting time for the examination and the result, so we are able to accelerate the diagnosis, and patients will start the treatment process faster. We pay great attention to the quality of the results, imaging and protocols of MR examinations – we do not skimp on them, so that the radiologist has the opportunity to accurately analyze the examined anatomical areas.

The waiting time for an MRI without contrast is about 1-2 days. After the visit, the patient receives images of the MRI examination on DVD or a link to the images, which can easily be sent to the referring doctor. The standard waiting time for the result (description) of an MRI scan is up to 10 working days – this time may be extended only during vacations and vacation/holiday periods, but we make every effort to have the result even after a few days.

During an MRI scan, the patient assumes a supine position – either on the back or on the abdomen, depending on the area to be examined. During the scan, the patient should not move, in order for the images obtained to be as precise as possible. An MR examination usually lasts from 15 to 45 minutes. During the entire time, the person being examined is under the control of the medical staff – he or she can communicate with the team using a microphone and camera. In some cases, it is possible to perform the examination under sedation, which means putting the patient to sleep – especially if the person being examined may have trouble holding position. Sedation examinations are not yet available at our facility.

What happens during an MRI from the point of view of medics? Located in the human body, protons (part of the hydrogen nucleus) are subjected to a magnetic field. Radio waves at an appropriately set frequency cause the protons to change their magnetization parameters. When the radio waves stop, the protons return to their original state and send a radio signal themselves , which is captured and analyzed by a computer and becomes a medical image.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI or MR for short) is a popular, safe and non-invasive medical test. It allows a thorough examination of the spine, head, abdomen and all bones, joints and soft tissues using a high-energy electromagnetic field. MRI is performed on both adults and children. The MRI examination is performed in a specially equipped laboratory.

In some cases such as diseases of the nervous system, neoplastic or other lesions, the administration of an intravenous contrast agent is required. The purpose of applying contrast is to differentiate the lesions in the images obtained during the examination. Before the examination, the patient must have a venflon inserted.

During the examination, we allow the patient to be supported by a third party, because for Us it is your comfort that matters.

Indications and contraindications for MRI examination

MR indications

MRIs of the head and spine are most commonly performed . MR examination is also recommended for suspected diseases such as:

In addition, indications for MRI are injuries and internal changes in the body.

MR contraindications

The strong effect of the magnetic field limits everyone’s ability to be examined. Contraindications for MRI of the head, spine and all other parts of the body include patients with an implant:

Depending on the individual situation, contraindications may include women in the first trimester of pregnancy and patients with metal endoprostheses, implants, artificial heart valves. In any situation, the patient requires a thorough history and arrangements with the doctor.

Note that menstruation is not a contraindication to the test.

Not sure how to prepare for your examination? Do you have any other questions?

You should report to the office in comfortable clothing, without metal accessories or jewelry. It is also advisable to forgo makeup, hairspray, illuminating lotion and other cosmetics that, because of the metal particles in their composition, could interfere with the diagnostic image.
Before entering the laboratory, patients must leave their cell phone, wallet with coins and credit cards, watch, trouser belt with metal buckle, jewelry, hair clips, hearing aid and any other items that could interfere with the MRI in the changing room. It is advisable to arrive at the laboratory at least 30 minutes before the scheduled examination time to fill out the medical questionnaire preceding the MRI.

People who have had an MRI with contrast are advised to drink plenty of still water (or other non-carbonated beverages) after the test. This will speed up the complete excretion of contrast from the body. Patients can return to their daily activities and diet after an MRI. MR examinations also do not affect the ability to drive unless sedatives, which can impair concentration, are administered.

The cost of an MR examination ranges from 670 to 1850 zlotys. The difference in price is primarily due to the specific site examined and the type of MRI (with or without contrast).

MRI – key information

Referral

Required only for abdominal MRI with contrast and MRI of the temporomandibular joints

Fasting

Only for examinations with contrast

Arrival time

30 minutes before the examination

Contraindications

Please read the list

Referral

A referral is not required for most examinations. Exceptions include contrast-enhanced abdominal MRI and MRI of the temporomandibular joints. A doctor’s referral is required for these examinations.

Contraindications

Absolute contraindications to the examination include:
  • Pacemaker
  • Cochlear implant
  • Insulin pump
  • Ferromagnetic metal elements in the body
Relative contraindications to the examination include:
  • First trimester of pregnancy
  • Stents
  • Orthopaedic implants
  • Dental implants
  • Dental braces or other metal implants
The examination may take place after the patient provides medical documentation concerning any possible foreign bodies in the body.

MRI without contrast

An MRI examination without contrast does not require any special preparation. Please wear clothing without metal elements and use as little makeup and hairspray as possible.

Examination with contrast agent administration

An MRI examination with contrast agent does not require fasting, except for prostate and pelvic examinations, where the patient should fast for 3 hours, and abdominal examinations and cholangiography, where the patient should fast for 5 hours on the day of the examination. Still water may be consumed. Patients with impaired kidney function are required to have a valid blood serum creatinine result, no older than 14 days.

Time before the MRI examination

Please arrive 30 minutes before the examination and bring any previous medical documentation related to the area being examined, including CDs/DVDs and reports.

Please be advised that the patient has the right to refuse the administration of a contrast agent, although this may reduce the diagnostic value of the examination. The radiologist supervising the examination at the MEDflow facility decides whether a contrast agent will be administered.

Frequently asked questions

We do not require a referral for most MRI examinations. However, a referral or specific recommendations from a specialist are needed for abdominal, liver and temporomandibular joint examinations.

No, you do not need to be fasted unless the test is performed with the administration of a contrast agent (e.g., abdominal, pelvic, breast, prostate) or is cholangiography.
For abdominal and cholangiography, you should be fasted for 5 hours, while for other tests with contrast you should be fasted for 3 hours. Non-carbonated water can be drunk.

There is no definite answer. The choice of test – MRI or CT scan – is decided by the referring doctor, depending on the type of condition and the purpose of diagnosis.

No, no facility in Poznan has an open MRI. Such devices have low image resolution, so it is worthwhile to consult with your doctor about the legitimacy of performing the test in this type of apparatus.

The MRI machine at MEDflow operates in a magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla.

No, we do not perform MRI examinations under sedation, anesthesia or sedation at our facility.

No. The administration of contrast differentiates a lesion whose nature is ambiguous on examination without contrast. Most often, examinations of the spine, head, and joints are examinations during which there is no need to administer a contrast agent. Contrast administration is necessary when examining soft tissues such as the neck, abdominal or pelvic organs, and when examining the breast or prostate. Patients who have undergone surgery (up to 2 years after) of the examined body part and oncology patients are asked to prepare for contrast administration.

Images from the test are available just minutes after the test is completed – you can get them on a DVD or through an online download link.
There is a wait of up to 10 working days for the MRI description. You can pick up the description yourself online (via medflow.co.uk) or in person at the facility.

The decision to administer the contrast agent is made by the radiologist overseeing the study.

Unfortunately, we currently do not offer the ability to expedite the study description.

No, the MR examination of the head cannot be performed with braces in place – including porcelain braces. The metal components cause artifacts (image distortions) that prevent proper evaluation. Therefore, it is recommended to remove the braces before the examination.
